Wyoming Homeschool Laws and Requirements
Aug 14, 2026Wyoming changed its homeschool law in 2025, and the change is worth knowing before you read anything older. Families are no longer required to submit a curriculum to the local school district. What remains is the substance: your home-based educational program administers a basic academic educational program covering seven named subjects. If you are pulling a child out of public school, there is a withdrawal step to complete with the district.

What the 2025 Change Did
For years Wyoming families submitted a curriculum to their local board of trustees each year. That requirement was repealed. The state superintendent's own statement is direct about it: the Homeschool Freedom Act repealed the requirement that homeschool families submit their curricula to their local school district, effective July 1, 2025.
Two things follow. First, if a website tells you to file a curriculum with your district, it is describing the old law. Second, the underlying obligation did not vanish. You still administer a curriculum that meets the basic academic educational program standard. What changed is that no one collects it.
Because no curriculum is submitted, there is nothing for a district to approve. Wyoming has never asked districts to bless a family's teaching methods, and now there is not even a filing that could invite review.
Required Versus Optional
Required. A curriculum meeting the basic academic educational program standard in the seven named subjects, and, for a child currently enrolled in public school, the in person withdrawal step with written consent given to the district.
Optional or prudent. Everything else. Attendance logs, lesson plans, grades, work samples, and test results are not collected by any Wyoming agency. Keeping them is a practical choice that supports a transcript and answers questions if your student later enrolls in a school applying its own placement and credit procedures. Any form a district offers beyond the withdrawal paperwork is a local convenience rather than a legal obligation.
How to Start Homeschooling in Wyoming
- Confirm whether your child is currently enrolled. That determines whether the withdrawal step applies to you.
- Complete the withdrawal in person. Meet with a district counselor or administrator and provide written consent to the withdrawal from school attendance.
- Build a sequentially progressive curriculum. Reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science.
- Skip the curriculum filing. There is no longer a submission to the district, so do not let an outdated form send you chasing one.
- Start your own record file. Not required, and the only record of your student's work that will exist.
